Tyto. A better deadbolt.

With a few engineers and my family, we created a deadbolt that locks the full frame of your door. Instead of the safety of that a deadbolt pretends to give you, the entire door becomes immovable. The lock makes your whole door a wall. True peace of mind with no weather, no unwanted person, no tool will get past this lock.

Follow us along as we launch!

Some of the work I can talk about:

Setting up a remote cycle tester. Every Dead Latch (the piece that holds your door closed when unlocked) and every Dead Bolt (the locking portion) has a requirement around a “Cycle”. A cycle is a door unlocking and opening, then closing and locking. The requirement for our lock is the highest grade, Grade A, which requires the latch to still function after 400,000 cycles. Parts of the test cannot be run at more than 30 cycles/min, which means that 400,000 cycles could take upwards of 10 days.

So I designed a test that I could watch remotely. Using a standalone Mac Mini, I connected an Arduino and an electronic Power Supply i could turn on and off on the Mac Mini. The Arduino is the motor driver for the stepper motor that drives the cycler, so I used the Arduino cloud, allowing me to change the code remotely.

I setup two Nest Cameras showing me the rotation of both handles, and the lock. I lastly setup the Mac Mini using Parsec, allowing me to remotely control.
